[13] 영어성경공부 - 창세기 11장 1~9절 (바벨탑)

[성경 본문]

창11:1

Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.

온 땅의 언어가 하나요 말이 하나였더라

 

창11:2

As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.

이에 그들이 동방으로 옮기다가 시날 평지를 만나 거기 거류하며

 

창11:3

They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.

서로 말하되 자, 벽돌을 만들어 견고히 굽자 하고 이에 벽돌로 돌을 대신하며 역청으로 진흙을 대신하고

 

창11:4

Then they said, 'Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.'

또 말하되 자, 성읍과 탑을 건설하여 그 탑 꼭대기를 하늘에 닿게 하여 우리 이름을 내고 온 지면에 흩어짐을 면하자 하였더니

 

창11:5

But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building.

여호와께서 사람들이 건설하는 그 성읍과 탑을 보려고 내려오셨더라

 

창11:6

The LORD said, 'If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.

여호와께서 이르시되 이 무리가 한 족속이요 언어도 하나이므로 이같이 시작하였으니 이 후로는 그 하고자 하는 일을 막을 수 없으리로다

 

창11:7

Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.'

자, 우리가 내려가서 거기서 그들의 언어를 혼잡하게 하여 그들이 서로 알아듣지 못하게 하자 하시고

 

창11:8

So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.

여호와께서 거기서 그들을 온 지면에 흩으셨으므로 그들이 그 도시를 건설하기를 그쳤더라

 

창11:9

That is why it was called Babel-because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

그러므로 그 이름을 바벨이라 하니 이는 여호와께서 온 땅의 언어를 혼잡하게 하셨음이니라 여호와께서 거기서 그들을 온 지면에 흩으셨더라

창11:1

Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.

이제   그     온      세상   가졌다 한    언어     그리고 한 공통의 말

speech는 연설, 담화의 뜻 외에 구어, 말의 뜻으로도 사용될 수 있습니다

 

창11:2

As             men moved eastward,    they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.

~함으로써 사람들 이동했다  동쪽으로  그들   찾았다 한 평원      시날   그리고 정책했다 거기

 

창11:3

They said to each other, "Come, let's        make bricks and     bake them thoroughly."

그들  말했다    서로에게          오라   우리~하자 만들다 벽돌들 그리고  굽다  그것들 완전히(철저히)

 

They used      brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.

그들   사용했다  벽돌    ~대신         돌    그리고 타르(역청) ~대신 모르타르(시멘트, 석회, 모래 물을 섞어서 물에 갠 것)

 

창11:4

Then they said, 'Come, let us       build ourselves a city,     with a tower that reaches to the heavens,

그 후 그들 말했다 오라       우리~하자 짓다    우리 스스로 한 도시 ~와   한 탑      그것    닿다     ~에 그  하늘

a tower that reaches에서 that은 주격 관계대명사로 사용되어 a tower를 부연설명하는 역할을 합니다.

 

so that we may          make a name for ourselves       and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.'

~ 위해   우리 하게 하다 만들다 한 이름  ~위해 우리 스스로 그리고 흩어지지 않다     ~도처에 그 표면 ~의 그    온     지면(땅)

so that은 ~하도록, ~위해 등의 목적 용도로 사용하며 scatter은 타동사이므로 be scattered 흩어지게 하다 이렇게 수동태로 사용되었습니다

 

창11:5

But      the LORD came down to see    the city and the tower that the men were building.

그러나   그    주님    왔다  내려    보시려고  그  도시 그리고 그 탑      그것   그  사람들 짓고 있었다

개역개정에서는 "그러나"가 나와 있지 않으나 영어성경에서는 But으로 분명하게 시작하고 있으며 to see를 통해 내려온 목적을 분명하게 밝히고 있습니다. 여기에도 the tower that the men were building에서 that 관계대명사가 사용되었는데 목적격 관계대명사로 사용되어 that을 생략해도 됩니다.

 

창11:6

The LORD said,       'If       as          one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this,

그    주님 말씀하셨다 만약 ~함으로써    한   민족      말한다       그   같은      언어      그들이 시작해왔다    하려고 이것

people 앞에 one이 붙어 있는데 이 때는 한 사람들이 아니라 한 민족, 한 족속 이렇게 해석을 해야 합니다.

have begun은 현재완료로 사용되어 과거부터 현재까지 시작해왔다 이렇게 해석하면 됩니다.

 

then    nothing they plan        to do will be        impossible for them. 

그러면  아무 것도 그들 계획하다 하려고 ~일 것이다   불가능한    ~에게 그들

위 문장은 nothing will be impossible(불가능한 것은 없다)에 부연설명 부분이 붙은 것이며 

"그들이 하려고 계획한 것들은 그들에게 불가능하지 않을 것이다"로 해석하면 됩니다.

 

창11:7

Come, let us      go down and    confuse      their language so they    will not                  understand each other.'

오라,   우리~하자 가다 내려  그리고 혼란시키다 그들의  언어     그래서 그들은 ~하지 못할 것이다  이해하다          서로

 

창11:8

So      the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.

그래서  그   주님    흩으셨다  그들을   ~에서 거기 ~도처 모든 그 땅,   그리고 그들 멈추었다  짓는 것    그  도시

 

창11:9

That is      why it was called Babel-because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world.

그것 ~이다  왜 그것 불렸다        바벨      왜냐하면  거기   그   주님   혼란시켰다 그    언어        ~의 그     온      세상

That is why "그러므로" 이렇게 해석하면 됩니다.

 

From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

~에서 거기     그   주님    흩으셨다   그들    ~도처 그 표면 ~의 그   온        땅(지면)
